Chapter 2

The Complete Set of

Annals of Ufological Research Advances

As the chapter title states, this chapter contains all 24 issues of AURA which were published between January, 1985 and October, 1994. Each issue is 12 pages in length and, because they were typescript, it was necessary to present the scanned pages of this book in a larger than my usual 6” x 9” format in order to enhance their readability. Unfortunately, the last two of the issues were not originally printed with good contrast and this might make portions of them a bit difficult to read now despite the best efforts having been made to enhance the contrast of their text for the purposes of this book. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause my readers.

On the first page of each of the 24 issues, the reader will find the volume number that contains that issue with there being 4 issues in each of the 6 volumes. To the right of an issue’s first page volume number is the number of that particular issue with each issue, as previously stated, containing 12 pages. Finally, below these are the month and year that particular issue was published. There were a total of 288 pages of material produced over the approximate decade that the journal was available. On pages 2 through 12 of each issue, the page number is always shown in the upper left or upper right hand corner of the page while the issue number is always given at the lower left or lower right hand corner of the page.

The reader will immediately notice that there is mathematics in AURA, a considerable amount, in fact. I make no apology for this because the original intent of the journal was to begin treating the subject of UFOs in a scientific fashion which, as a physical science, meant that it would have to include some mathematical reasoning. However, to make the material as valuable as possible to as wide an audience as possible, I always endeavored to make the mathematical derivations presented as simple as possible and to only rarely stray from the use of high school level algebra. So as not to exclude those completely unfamiliar with mathematics from the concepts being presented, I always provided a verbal summary of what had just been demonstrated.

Since AURA was intended to be a scientific work, it would, inevitably, have to deal with very large or very small quantities. In scientific literature, such quantities are usually presented in what is known as “scientific notation” (which is just a type of exponential notation that is used in mathematics); that is, the quantity is presented as a first factor which is just a decimal number between 1 and 10 in value that is then multiplied by a second factor which is a “base” value of 10 that has been “raised” to some whole number exponent or power which can either positive or negative in sign.

The number of digits or “significant figures” in the first
